BMV-712 and SmartShunt: remember SOC while off

2023-12-14

The BMV-712 and the SmartShunt have gotten a great improvement. They will now regularly store the state of charge to memory, and resume from there after losing power.

This fixes the common issue on vans, boats and many other systems that are regularly shut down while not in use: when wired behind the main battery switch, the BMV (or SmartShunt) would forget the state of charge. So, when powering the system up, it would show three dashes and required a full charge in order to show the battery percentage again.

This new feature will be the preferred option for the majority of installations. See below for how to activate it.

The other two options that define how the SOC is initialised at powerup are also still available. Here is a list of all three:

  1. Keep SOC. The new one. Use this setting on systems where there are no loads  or chargers connected when switched off.

  2. Start unsynchronised. Use this for systems where, for example, you want to know that there was a loss of power.

  3. Start on 100%. Now that the state of charge can be remembered, there are not many use cases left for this option; if any.

How to enable this new feature?

First update the firmware. Which is very easy to do: using the VictronConnect App on your phone or tablet, connect via Bluetooth to the BMV/SmartShunt. Then follow instructions to update the firmware. And once this is done go into the Settings, select Battery, and at the bottom find the updated setting as also shown in above picture.

Not for the BMV-700 and BMV-702

Unfortunately its not possible to implement this same improvement in the BMV-700 series.
